I didn’t expect one of my favorite uses of AI this year to be something so… mundane. But here we are – and I have to say, Google Gemini’s call screening on my Pixel 9 is low-key brilliant.

The Problem: Spam Calls Suck

You know the drill. You’re in the middle of coding, cooking, or just trying to exist – and suddenly your phone rings from a number you don’t recognize.

Do you answer it? Ignore it? Let it go to voicemail and later wonder if you missed something important?

It used to drive me nuts. Not just because of the interruption – but because of the maybe. What if it’s a legit call? A delivery? A job thing? A doctor?

And most of the time… it was spam. Every. Single. Time.

Enter Gemini: My New Digital Bouncer

With the Pixel 9, Google Gemini quietly started handling it for me. Now when a shady call comes through, the AI picks up instead – and the results are satisfying, to say the least.

It answers with a natural voice, asks the caller to state their business, and transcribes their response in real time while I watch.

Half the time, the spam callers just freeze. They stammer. Some even hang up mid-sentence. It’s like watching AI troll a telemarketer – and I live for it.

The Impact: Time Back (and a Bit of Entertainment)

Here’s what it’s done for me:

No more pointless interruptions when I’m mid-focus or mid-nap.
Zero anxiety about missing something important – Gemini shows me a transcript so I can make the call (or not).
Unexpected entertainment from watching spammers get wrecked by a robot voice asking simple questions.

I didn’t realize how much mental energy those little interruptions were taking until they were gone. It’s not a flashy feature, but it makes a real difference in my daily life.

Big AI? Cool. Small AI wins? Honestly, even better.

There’s a lot of momentum with AI doing “big” things – writing code, generating images, building businesses. But what I appreciate most is when it just quietly fixes something annoying.
